Apple Scab Fungus Update

As you have witnessed, our area is continuing to experience an unprecedented cool and rainy spring season, which we hope will end sooner than June 21st, the first day of summer!

Midway Airport records indicate the highest rain totals since they began keeping records in 1928. Weather records indicate a moderate tendency toward a cooler and wetter than normal meteorological summer period when proceeded by a wet spring. Short-term predictions indicate above normal rains over the next two weeks.

As a result of this extremely cool, wet spring, apple scab fungus will prevail and show degrees of symptoms on trees that have been treated with the Wedgel system as well as our commercial accounts that had received 3 spray applications. We have 16 Certified Arborists in the field that keep our Plant Health Care Department informed, therefore we are aware of not only the condition of crabapple trees, but various other fungal diseases on trees and plants that will surely flourish this year.

We will continue to monitor the situation, and as a pro-active company we wanted you to know that we are aware that some species of crabapples may not respond as well to treatment, due to the extreme wet and cold conditions we are having and may continue to endure. Please remember to rake and dispose of fallen infected leaves to inhibit the fungal spores from reinfecting the remaining leaves on the tree.
