Disease Control
By a "disease" of a tree, we mean any condition that interferes with the normal development of a tree. Development is normal when it is typical of that kind of plant. If the stem is stunted, the leaves are curled, mottled or spotted, if the plant wilts, the green color is lacking, if the flowers are of an unusual color or form—if the plant manifests any such abnormalities in its development—it is said to be diseased.
Conditions Needed for a Disease to Thrive:
- A Susceptible Host Plant
- A Disease Causing Organism
- An Environment & Time Span Suitable for Infection and Disease Development
If any one of these conditions is not met, an infectious disease is not likely to occur/ Knowledge of particular diseases and their host plants is needed for correct diagnosis and treatment. Certain diseases can only be treated at a particular time when the fungus is thriving. Correct timing and the number of applications needed is critical when controlling diseases.
Keeping your trees healthy will lessen their chance of contracting a disease. However, in some cases it is unavoidable when all three criteria listed above is met. Implementing a plant health care program will enable you to treat your trees in a timely manner, before the disease gets the best of your tree. Staying one step ahead will prolong the longevity of your trees and enhance the beauty of your landscape.
