Insect Control
The severity of insect problems varies from year to year. Proper control begins with a knowledge of which insects are likely to attack a particular type of plant, and when those insects will begin causing damage. Knowing when the insect will be in a susceptible stage of growth is important for effective pesticide application. The life cycle of a pest and their vulnerable stage is often a very brief period. Timing is key to effectively control most insects.
Many insects can be present at low populations without harming the desirable plant. Careful observation and knowledge is required for diagnosis and recommended treatment. The application of pesticides is an important part of woody plant management; however, it is not the only effective approach to pest control. Certain pests can be controlled only by chemicals, other can be controlled equally well through cultural practices, and some cannot be controlled at all.
Elimination of all pests is not the goal in Plant Health Care. The goal of PHC is to optimize - not maximize - pest control.
All in all, it is best to remember healthy trees are less likely to be attacked by insects. Keeping your trees fertilized, well watered during drought conditions, and routinely pruned will help the tree to withstand a variety of stresses.
